Commercial Bank Actively Promoting Physical Health, Not Just Financial Health

12 March 2013
Health, fitness and well-being is central to Qatar’s national vision and Commercial Bank, one of the leading full service banks in Qatar, is actively supporting a drive to instill a more healthy and active culture within the Bank’s family and the community at large. The Bank is spearheading and sponsoring a series of events around Qatar to promote these important goals and to encourage its customers to be not only financially healthy, but physically healthy too.
To further embrace the spirit of National Sports Day, the Bank’s Financial Fitness Check is being rolled out at mall branches across the country, promoting the importance of creating healthy lifestyle habits, not only in sport, but also in personal finance. Customers are invited to review their finances with staff who are providing valuable tips and advice to ensure they’re in a fit state of financial health. Employees are able to show customers ways to maximise their money by starting to save regularly, enhance their credit card by taking a secondary card for their partner, and top up and refinance loans. Every time a customer completes a checkup, they’re immediately eligible to win a prize that ranges from a free 3-day pass to Fitness First gyms in Qatar, to winning a mountain bike. Launched on National Sports Day, Commercial Bank’s Financial Fitness Check offer has been extended for another few weeks due to popular demand, and will be available at many more of its mall branches.
In addition to spearheading the Financial Fitness initiative, Commercial Bank is the principal sponsor of “Step into Health”, a major initiative undertaken by the AspireZone Foundation. Step into Health aims to improve the health of the nation by encouraging the people of Qatar to meet the recommended minimum level of daily physical activity. A first for Qatar and the wider region, the initiative aims to encourage people to walk at least 10,000 steps each day and to achieve a healthier all-round lifestyle. The Bank has given away 400 free pedometers to help people monitor their progress towards achieving this goal.
Andy Stevens, Group CEO, Commercial Bank, said: “Commercial Bank is dedicated to actively promoting initiatives that contribute positively to the health and well being of all individuals in Qatar. We believe strongly in corporate citizenship and recognise the necessity of supporting community initiatives that benefit our nation under guiding principles which encourage active living and healthier lifestyles in all aspects.”
Commercial Bank was recently Lead Sponsor of the Reach Out To Asia Wheels ‘n’ Heels event, a full day family activity at the Museum of Islamic Art Park. Families were given the opportunity to cycle around the circuit used in the Tour of Qatar race for the world’s best professional road cyclists, as well as take part in fitness activities and watch celebrities perform. The event was not only a fun community event, but it also helped the charity ROTA raise funds to provide quality education to 48 million children in need across Asia.
Commercial Bank was also very active during the recent 2nd Annual National Sports Day and proudly celebrated with a wide range of fun-packed activities organised for employees and their families at various venues around Doha. To encourage team spirit, the Bank ran an internal campaign in the weeks leading up to National Sports Day encouraging employees to engage enthusiastically in as many local community and sporting events as possible. The Bank’s employees and their families showcased their sporting side in celebration of National Sports Day at various competitive and non-competitive events, including a football match and cricket match organised by the Bank, by participating in the Qatar Central Bank Marathon on the Doha Corniche and also the Aspire Zone Foundation’s a ‘Journey to Remember’ event. Since Commercial Bank is the exclusive strategic partner in the banking sector for the Katara Cultural Village, the various sports activities and events that were held at Katara were also promoted to the Bank’s employees and their families.
Commenting on the Qatar National Vision 2030, Mr. Stevens added, “We are inspired by the wise leadership and governance of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, as we see Qatar continue to grow and flourish. Sport and healthy living is a cornerstone of the vision for the country as we increasingly play host to the world’s leading sports men and women and develop our home-grown talent. Commercial Bank is extremely proud to be a part of that vision and will continue to play a prominent role to both promote and support various sporting initiatives within the community so that we move closer towards achieving the country’s 2030 Vision.”
Commercial Bank is dedicated to supporting and enhancing Qatar’s international sporting reputation through Corporate Social Responsibility programmes and sponsorship of various events from local community activities to international competitions. Promoting the Bank’s support for excellence in sport on the global stage, Commercial Bank continues to be the principal sponsor of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and the Grand Prix of Qatar Moto GP.
