17 June 2013

Trade between Qatar and South Korea expected to almost triple by 2025

Doha, Qatar: Commercial Bank, one of the leading full service banks in Qatar, announced the appointment of Mr. Sukchang Roh as the new Head of the Bank’s Korea Business Desk, which operates within the Government and International Banking Division at the Bank.

Commercial Bank established the Korea Business Desk in October 2011 with HANA Bank, a leading financial institution in South Korea, to jointly promote the growing trade and investment flows between Qatar and South Korea.  The business has successfully supported companies in both countries in developing and growing their business in new areas.  The move was another first for a Qatari bank and representative of the dynamic and forward-looking approach Commercial Bank is known for.

Qatar is one of the biggest export markets for South Korean engineering and infrastructure companies, and the trade volume between the two countries is expected to reach USD 29.5bn by 2025, from its current value of USD 10.01 billion.

The business leverages Commercial Bank’s longstanding relationships with most large Korean companies operating in Qatar, and the Bank is well positioned to support new Korean companies entering the market.

Mr. Roh is a senior banker with diversified experience of almost 20 years in Corporate Banking and Risk Management areas at Hana Bank, including key assignments at various large branches in Korea.  He has a Master’s of Science in Advance Management (MBA) from Claremont University, California, USA.

Hana Bank is part of the diversified Hana Financial Services group, which recently acquired Korea Exchange Bank to become the second largest financial group in Korea.  Hana Bank’s financial strength is reflected by strong investment grade ratings of A1 / P-1 (Moody’s).  Hana Bank’s large domestic branch network is supported by subsidiaries in China and Indonesia.

Andrew Stevens, Group CEO of Commercial Bank said, “We are delighted to welcome Mr. Roh, a very accomplished and experienced banker, to this important position at the Bank. South Korea is an extremely important trading partner for Qatar and the Bank is proud to have worked closely with most of the leading Korean companies doing business in Qatar. I’m certain that Mr. Roh will use his expertise to build on the considerable achievements of his predecessor in helping increase trade opportunities between the two countries.”
